Assignment 3 Final Animation

10 Clips

Storyboard

150 Words for Assignment 1&2

During this semester, the challenges of this course have increased with every assignment. Assignment 1 was a simple exploration and i put a lot of effort into. I thought about what was my inpiration and how i wanted the viewer to really experience the "message." The theme of FENCE evoked me to think further into the word to be able to get a set dropping for teh animation. "Fear" became a sub theme and by the end of teh assignment it became the theme for teh rest of the semester. Assignment 1 is not meant to make you fearful when watching [and neither is assignment 2] but exploring different versions of fear.

With assignment 2 i let the music inspire the animation, it cultivated me to think about how music really evolves a viewers emotions and viewing experience, the modelling wasn't very exciting but i wanted to really explore with music and camera speed.

Overall the faults in assignment 1 & 2 have helped me decide on the storyboard and techniques to be used for assignment 3.

Assignment 3 Explained

Assignment 3 was based apon the themes during the first 2 assignments of fear. I decided to use the Holocaust pictures found in the beginning of the semester. I ran with the theme of fear and to stay in the architectural boundary, i decided on a haunted hospital and "looks are deceiving!!"

Assignment 2 Concept

Basically chaos in the home!! The music was a driving factor for my story board, I loved the emotion it demanded it I give. I chose to put pictures in the maze to make it represent a home; I gave it a context of brick walls, picket fences and green grass. I decided to take away the frightening gloom and make it kind of comical. The brighter colours and the lively music does execute this.

Final Animation

An explanation of my animation is simple. i tried to rbring together all what i thought of fence. Because we couldn't be literal it made things harder to portray. The first section was truely inspired by the Get Smart opening sequence. The noise of clashing metal was the main source of inspiration and was my decision for the opening animation and the choice of material.

The second part was what i wanted to bring alive what i felt the people felt during the Holocaust. Fear, trapped and confusion being apart of it. Fear being a bit hard to portray in an abstract way, i concentrated on confusion and trapped. The maze was a good way of portrayal and remembering a part in one of the Harry Potter movies i thought a maze would be perfect. The choice of material was important because i didn't want it to look scary but pleasing to the eye.

The third and last part was meant to look inviting and very beautiful. But also suffocating and deceiving as it decends on you that you feel trapped in the chaos of these beautiful cloths/material.

I hope you enjoy the translation of the term fence

15 Pictures

These pictures are to explain my thought process to the combined video

A Fence could look inviting, what's behind it can look so beautiful and the fence can magnify the beauty.

The way i see a fence is explained in my 50 words. I denote it as fear and entrapment. This picture is symbolic of someone always watching.

The Holocaust was a main source of underdstanding fear and therefore the term fence. The time in history was an extrememly sad event and everything about recollects fear and entrapment.

These bodies were being lined up like fences, a barrier. So sad.

These pictures brings in the image of a fence into this world of barriers and being trapped into the lives of these sufferers

The book, The Hiding Place is a main source of understanding of what these people went through. This image is captured from the movie of that book. Their faces says it all really...haunting and memorable.

These next pictures are explaining what a fence can really do to a person. Although you are on the outside, are you really safe?

When you are trapped you are very much lonely.

So to me fence is:

  • fear
  • trapped
  • lonely
  • deceiving
  • inviting
  • haunting

50 Theoretical Words

The term FENCE brings many images to mind, it reminds me of specific books or movies that I have come in contact with. The way I see the term FENCE is FEAR. It is a boundary that one cannot get out of; you become scared and frightened because you feel suffocated.

Source of Inspiration:

Get Smart
The Hiding Place by Corrie Ten-Boom
